Rock Star or Rocket Scientist?
Lots of careers look exciting but whether they’re a good
fit for you is another question. Research shows most people still
get their career ideas from their family and friends – they’re
the ones that know you the best. Or you may have seen or read something
that has sparked your interest.
Then again a lot of school leavers really have no idea what they
would like to do and it can be one of the hardest questions you
have ever asked yourself.
Sit down and write a list of things you like to do or are good
at - subjects you liked at school, and even hobbies that you enjoy.
Also think about the type of person you are – an extrovert
who likes talking to people, or someone who prefers to work on
their own. Also think about any skills you have – or would
like to learn.
When you’ve finished get one of your friends,
your family or your career advisor to have a look and brain-storm
about the types of careers that might include the things you’ve
got on your list.
Do a little internet research as well:
www.mycareer.com.au, www.myfuture.edu.au , and www.abc.net/acedayjobs.
The Victorian government also has a couple of youth focused websites
that can give you some ideas of what kinds of jobs are around and
how to go about either applying or training for them. Go to www.youthcentral.vic.gov.au/Jobs+&+Careers or
try the Workplace website www.workplace.gov.au and
click through to the career job search tips for school leavers.
