Your school life is almost over, and it’s
time to now start thinking about the next stage of your life. There are many
options for school leavers – from further study, traineeships, starting work,
or even just taking a year off to really think about where you want your career
to take you. Finding out which option – or options – are the right ones for you
can be a confusing task but there are many resources available to help you
navigate the varied pathways that will be presented to you.
The most recent On Track Survey from the
Victorian government shows that university study is still the most common
destination for school leavers (43.9 per cent), but many more are now choosing
to take up apprenticeships or traineeships while the number of young people
choosing to take a Gap year has nearly doubled.
It’s hard to decide what is the right thing
for you, and even more difficult to try and imagine the career you may want to
have in 20 years’ time, so getting as much guidance as you can is a must - from
school careers adviser, family, friends, even people you don’t know who may
already work in a field in which you’re interested can help you make those
important decisions.
