Take the First Step
If you don’t know what skills you have, or what career areas
your interests relate to, then try www.myfuture.com.au or the Australian
JobSearch site www.jobsearch.gov.au. They have questionnaires that
can help you find a direction for a future career path.
It is also worth having a chat with your school careers advisor
who often has experience and information that can help. Speak
to people you know or others who are studying or working in jobs
that seem interesting to you – these are often the best
sources of information.
Make the most of Careers Days around
your region where you can speak with someone who is working in
a job that might interest you.
www.jobguide.dest.gov.au has an extensive list of occupations
and information about education and training, employment opportunities
and personal requirements.
Remember career development is a lifelong journey, and the world
of work is always changing. Having one job is very rare these
days and with each new job you take on you will be learning new
skills and gaining new experiences.

Studying is not for me
We aren’t all cut out for studying. That’s why more
and more schools offer vocational options.
If school based apprenticeships or traineeships are offered
at your school, you can start studying towards a nationally recognised
qualification in year 11 and 12.
School based apprenticeships are great for people who enjoy
hands-on learning because they combine study with training and
paid employment. Ask your teacher or careers counselor what’s
on offer at your school.
You may also be able to complete a school based apprenticeship
at one of the seven new technical colleges in NSW. These colleges
offer courses in traditional trades such as commercial cookery,
engineering, construction and mechanics. There are campuses at
Port Macquarie, Gosford, Western Sydney, Queanbeyan, the Hunter
Valley, Illawarra (Wollongong) and Dubbo.
